Show moreGraduating from high school is a pivotal milestone in a young person's life, symbolizing independence and the promise of future opportunities. However, for students with disabilities, this experience can differ significantly due to the unique challenges they face when transitioning into adulthood. A key component of their special education programming is preparing them for life beyond high school. However, challenges arise when special education teachers lack the knowledge or confidence to effectively write and implement a transition plan that addresses the individual needs of their students. This study explores the perspectives and experiences of special education team members regarding the implementation of a transition coordinator and its impact on special education programming.

Show moreAlthough there is a growing emphasis on trauma-informed care in music therapy clinical practice, research specifically addressing the concept of safety—particularly psychological and physical safety—remains limited. Therefore, this thesis aimed to understand the concept of safety in the field of music therapy and how it informs practice, education, and professional interactions. Given the limited existing research on this topic, a grounded theory methodology was employed to generate a deeper understanding of how safety is conceptualized in the field based on the lived experiences and insights of practitioners. The primary researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with a total of 11 participants. The interviews were recorded and transcribed, and the transcripts were analyzed and coded using ATLAS.ti. The findings proposed the following theory: Within music therapy contexts, safety is a dynamic experience that is constantly negotiated and co-constructed by participants through prioritizing care and well-being in the relationship and conditions for safety, including trust, are present. Interpretations of findings, implications for music therapy practice, and recommendations for future research were included.

Show moreMental health and substance use are major concerns for youth across the nation, particularly with poor mental health on the rise. Student Assistance Programs (SAPs) have been put in place so that students in need of services can be referred to these programs and get appropriate services recommended to them. However, there has been a lack of specific data analysis on SAPs. The purpose of this study was to find predictive factors that impact which students access services that are recommended through the SAP program. Spearman’s correlations, binary logistic regressions, and a binomial test were utilized to see if there were predictive factors for receiving written permission, accessing school services, and accessing community services. One predictive factor that was found in this study was that as grade level increased, the likelihood of receiving parent permission to proceed with the SAP process (and thus getting recommended services) decreased. The study also found that students who are recommended for school services are highly likely to access those services. However, the data showed that academic supports had the lowest rate of being accessed. Another major finding that was uncovered was that receiving parent permission to proceed with the SAP process was a major barrier to accessing services. Analyses from this study indicate a need to further investigate the obstacles that prevent parents from giving permission to proceed with the SAP process.
