Show moreOver the past decades, the rate of autism has increased around the world (Ghasemtabar et al., 2015). A prolonged impairment in social skills and communication is a key feature of autism. According to Vaiouli and Schertz (2012) joint attention is an important developmental milestone for developing higher levels of social engagement. The delay or absence of joint attention is typically seen in individuals with autism (Vaiouli & Schertz, 2012). Given that there is no known treatment or cure for autism, the focus in supporting individuals with autism is aimed toward implementing an intervention strategy that targets the symptoms of autism (Yum et al., 2020). The current investigation conducted a meta-analysis on the effects of music therapy on social skills in individuals with autism. The analysis for this study was based on data from four research studies providing 20 effect size estimates. The sample within the four studies included data from 117 participants. The sample size for the effect size analysis was based on a sample size of n = 596. The four articles included in this meta-analysis produced an overall large positive significant effect size of d = 0.572 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.37 to 0.78. The mean effect size suggests a large significant effect from music therapy across all studies. All studies included in this current investigation published and reported overall positive results. The Q-statistic tests revealed significant heterogeneity across all studies, with variability across the mean effect size estimates, ranging from d = - 0.14 to d = 1.28. Since the effect size estimates were all positive for the published studies, it is likely that publication bias existed in the studies used in this meta-analysis. According to Walker et al. (2008) high levels of heterogeneity can compromise the conclusion of a meta-analysis, therefore future research is also needed to help decrease the level of heterogeneity across studies.

Show moreEffective principals and internal coaches play a crucial role in implementing and maintaining a positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) framework within schools. In addition to managing increased expectations, stress, and accountability of the principalship, certain building administrators assume the role of internal PBIS coaches. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to explore and analyze the experiences of principals who serve in this dual capacity. Specifically, the advantages and limitations principals face when acting as PBIS team leaders are the focus of this evaluation, which will assist in addressing a gap in the current literature. Utilizing a purposeful sample of 10 principals from Pennsylvania schools, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to gather the participants' insights and utilize a phenomenological analysis to capture the essence of their shared experience. The findings of this research equip school leaders and educational facilitators with valuable insights to support the design and preservation of effective PBIS frameworks.

This qualitative study seeks to gain insights into how these teachers perceive the abilities and challenges of these children and how they believe they can best support them in their learning. The research will survey responses with a sample of general education teachers to collect data on their experiences and perspectives. The findings of this study could contribute to a better understanding of the attitudes and beliefs that inform teachers' practice towards children with disabilities in general education and inform the development of strategies to enhance inclusive education for all students.

Show moreAn Individual Education Program (IEP) is a critical document that drives decisions about educational support and services for students with a disability. It is imperative that parents have a role in the development of their child’s IEP through a collaborative process. This study examines the correlations between various subgroups and the level of satisfaction of a collaborative IEP meeting. In this qualitative study, a digital survey is used to gain feedback from 29 parents of students from preschool through twelfth grade receiving special education services. Findings reveal that parents expressed overall satisfaction with the level of collaboration at IEP meetings with relatively positive satisfactory ratings consistent through each survey question. Survey data was then correlated with four subgroups; grade level, disability category, number of IEP meetings attended, and race/ethnicity. Themes emerged from synthesizing the data specific to four subgroups that included variations in the data. As part of the study, participants provided suggestions for improving collaboration at IEP meetings. Parents expressed a desire for improved communication, opportunity to provide feedback, and improved agenda for IEP meetings. In contrast, some challenges were noted by some parents that limit parental engagement. The importance of this data can potentially impact the effectiveness of IEP meetings and improve student outcomes. A consideration for future research could explore the impact of the recommended interventions, change of district policies, and generalization across other school districts.

Show morePennsylvania public-school principals are expected to be instructional leaders for all students within their district. When it comes to leadership for students with disabilities, this role can be problematic due to a lack of experience in the field of special education and pre-service special education training. Special education leadership should be a significant concern for school administrators as their roles have increased to ensuring successful outcomes for all students, the increased number of students placed in special education, the high cost associated with educating students in special education, and the due process ramifications if educational outcomes are not achieved. The research has demonstrated that overall, public-school principals receive little to no formal training in leading special education in pre-service or on-going professional development. The purpose of this research study was twofold. The research is helpful to colleges and universities when developing plans of study and programming for future public-school principal and leadership training degrees and certificates. This research also provides a platform where current Pennsylvania public-school principals can identify where their special education knowledge is lacking and how to become a better instructional leader for their own district’s special education population. This study provided insight into understanding the factors that contribute to the lack of special education training in special education programs by higher education entities.

Show moreThe Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a federal law that requires that students with disabilities are provided with a Free and Appropriate Public Education. The cost of ensuring FAPE can be quite high for students that require more specialized supports; however, in not meeting that standard, districts may be liable for compensatory education. Much of the responsibility to fund special education, especially in Pennsylvania, falls on the schools to raise through local taxes. This has put schools in very challenging circumstances in regard to their budget. States across the country have conducted a Costing Out Analysis to review the necessary spending levels reviewed for education. Many studies discuss the need for higher funding allocations from state and federal governments so that the high-cost burden does not fall on LEAs and local tax dollars to meet the IDEA compliance requirements. While overall compliance with IDEA has improved over time, it is still an issue that needs to be addressed. This study used multiple regression to determine if there is a link between compliance with the Cyclical Monitoring for Continuous Improvement and factors such as special education spending and percentage of population receiving special education supports. The data are all public record and was collected through Pennsylvania Department of Education online Databases. The data revealed a regression model suggests that the relationship between the number of areas of non-compliance has a significantly moderate negative correlation with both the number of special education expenditures and the percentage of special education students. The model can explain or predict 11.4% of the number of areas of noncompliance in a school district.

Though many factors can be contributing to these high attrition rates, new teachers identify classroom management as one of their biggest challenges (Thompson, 2010). Considering this commonly reported challenge, this research study sets forth to understand how disruptive behavior in classrooms can impact job satisfaction for new teachers. Furthermore, this research study identifies the perspectives of new elementary school teachers relative to their classroom management, and gain insight into how professional development or training opportunities may impact new elementary school teachers’ perceptions on classroom management. The methodologies used in this study include quantitative and qualitative methods. An online questionnaire with both open-ended and closed-ended questions were completed by participants. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data from the closed-ended responses in the questionnaire, and qualitative data was gathered and grouped into codes, which were then supported by themes. The three major themes that were supported by the data in this study include (a) behavior disruptions that occur in the classroom have a direct impact on new elementary school teachers job satisfaction, (b) the 7 research-based classroom interventions and supports are not all found to be effective for most new elementary school teachers, and (c) training and professional development opportunities to support classroom management are lacking. Results of the data suggest that new elementary school teachers experience behavior disruptions in the classroom that impact overall job satisfaction, and minimal training opportunities are being reported to help support classroom management. Additionally, the 7 research-based classroom management interventions were not all effective for participants. Recommendations for future research include larger sample size. Implications for positive change include increased job satisfaction and higher retention rates among new elementary school teachers.

Studies related to therapy dogs have shown success in reducing stress and anxiety, improving behavior and self-esteem, increasing reading scores, promoting socialization and motivation, increasing rates of de-escalation, and helping younger children develop empathy. Common concerns related to the use of therapy dogs have previously been documented. These concerns include child and animal welfare, animal hygiene, zoonotic disease, and fear or cultural differences. Concerns such as these may cause schools to deny the use of therapy dogs in their facilities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine what problems have manifested in schools and how they compare to concerns documented by previous studies. Staff in Pennsylvania schools were surveyed to identify what, if any, problems arose during the implementation of therapy dog programs within their districts, and whether staff perceptions changed after implementation. Results from this study can assist school stakeholders in decision-making and policy development related to therapy dog implementation. Despite problems that have manifested, including those specific to K-12 schools, staff perspectives of therapy dogs became more favorable after implementation.

Show moreAbstract The last few years have seen an increased interest in the effectiveness of special education services for student-inmates with disabilities housed in restrictive housing units (RHUs) for a minimum of 22 hours per day but “few studies have examined the complexities associated with restrictive housing” (Butler, Solomon, and Spohn, 2018, p. 1174). These student-inmates are placed in RHU’s for disciplinary reasons, medical precautions, mental health evaluations, plus other underlying variables depending on the policies of each correctional facility. This purpose of this research study was to better understand how special education teachers and special education supervisors provided a FAPE for student-inmates housed in RHUs with little to no time out of their cell and limited instructional hours due to prison policies that exclude them from attending live instruction. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) with in-depth one-to-one interviews was applied to the lived experiences of the participants who provide special education services to student-inmates housed in RHUs at county prisons. State and federal prisons were excluded from this student because the researcher wanted to solely focus on county prisons. The researcher used a small sample size for the structured interviews but recruited participants from different county prisons across the state. The participants included three special education teachers and three special education supervisors. Three common themes emerged after analyzing the data: (1) the use of cell-study packets for RHU student-inmates was a replacement at institutions where access to live instruction was prohibited, (2) safety and security policies that amplified institutional barriers superseded student-inmates educational rights, and (3) access to educational programming was immeasurably different between non-RHU student-inmates and RHU student-inmates. The findings of this study had an overarching theme that participants continually acknowledged how institutional barriers severely limited their ability to provide a good quality education for RHU student-inmates. It is critical that future research on this topic expand upon the understanding of how low-quality secondary education programs at prisons has the potential to thwart the legal obligations of providing a FAPE. The implication is that low quality education programming is recognized throughout correctional facilities, but the focus is primarily on adult education while the delivery of appropriate special education services is overlooked.

Show moreThis qualitative research study analyzed open-ended survey responses from teachers and administrators regarding perceptions of the support administrators provide for culturally responsive practices and addressing the needs of at-risk and underserved populations. For purposes of this research study, the teacher group included educators who have an impact on the day-to-day functions within the classroom environment: paraprofessionals, assistants, and related service providers. Building-level principals, assistant principals, and central office administration including superintendent, assistant superintendent, curriculum supervisor, and special education supervisor(s) were included in the administrator group. Responses from both groups were reviewed separately and comparatively to determine whether there were similarities and differences between teachers’ perceptions of the supports provided by administrators and administrators’ perceptions of the supports they provide. Qualitative data were reviewed and evaluated to provide an analysis aligned with the study’s research questions. Participants were from a diverse group of professionals across Pennsylvania. Survey responses maintained full confidentiality of the participants for protection from any potential negative consequences or outcomes from their participation in the research project. A comprehensive review of the literature was completed to provide comparative data to complement the study results and analysis of individual survey responses. The overall outcome of the study is dependent on and limited based on the participant sample size and diversity of the participant environments.
