Adapting place, embracing hybridity: brian friel's and frank mcguinness's dramatic adaptations of anton chekhov and henrik ibsen
In this dissertation, I examine adaptations of plays by Henrik Ibsen and Anton Chekhov by the celebrated contemporary Irish playwrights Brian Friel (1929 - 2015) and Frank McGuinness (b. 1953). Critics have analyzed some of the individual adaptations, but I connect the adaptations done by Friel and McGuinness, discovering deeper relationships between these Irish playwrights and Ibsen and Chekhov. Moreover, I interrogate how these adaptations function as a way of redefining Ireland; they repre...

Administrator perceptions regarding pennsylvania's mtss/rtii framework and gifted elementary students
Providing equitable education for all students is the responsibility of administrators, teachers, and parents. Even though the MTSS/RtII Framework has evolved from the RtI and RtII models, the basis is the same: intervening and identifying students' needs and analyzing data and programming instruction to meet all students' needs. Even though in the early stages of RtI gifted students were not included, recent literature has proven that it is a must for gifted success. When incorporating the ...

Alcoholic republic/temperate empire: temperance and imperialism in u.s literature, 1830-1870
This project draws on hemispheric American studies, new historicism, and feminist scholarship to explore connections between the antebellum temperance movement and U.S. imperialism. Employing Amy Kaplan's concept of "manifest domesticity", I argue that white female authors used meanings ascribed to male frontier drunkards to argue for their own importance to the imperial enterprise. In Western texts by white women, the white female character becomes a necessary controlling and civilizing forc...

analysis of varying instructional time and the association with third grade reading and mathematics proficiency on the pennsylvania system of school assessment
State-wide assessment practices began in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2001) as an attempt to quantify student achievement. The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment utilized to monitor student achievement of academic standards as well as the efficiency of school programs in supporting student attainment of such standards (Pennsylvania Department of Education, 2014). Although the 500 Pennsylvania public scho...

Arriving at this place: a teacher's journey to fostering sustainable international service-learning in the writing classroom
International service-learning scholars state the need for more research on sustainable service programs (Cushman, 2002), service programs that are reciprocal (Welch, 2002), and instructor and community member perspectives (D'Arlach, Sanchez, & Feuer, 2009). As a result, I developed this study because I wanted to understand how sustainable international service-learning could be fostered through a redefinition of reciprocity, as well as a focus on locality. Because there has been less focus o...

Caregivers of children of incarcerated parents: motivations for involvement in the family-school partnership
The caregivers of children of incarcerated parents have been given a responsibility to ensure proper care of a child's physical, emotional, and mental needs. Poehlmann, Dallaire, Loper and Shear (2010) have indicated that children of incarcerated parents have risk factors that affect social and academic outcomes. These risks include substance abuse and future incarceration, as well as attendance difficulties and failure in school. The partnership between the family and the school setting may ...

Caribbean
This dissertation applies my coined concept, "the ocularity of the self," which refers to how individuals constantly reconfigure their "lens" to the extent that the restructuring of their image results in acceptance of societal ocular dominance. Hence, the privileging of society's metaphorical eye over the individual's metaphorical eye, skews the acuity and validity of his or her self-image. I examine how the fiction and non-fiction prose narratives of Caribbean women authors Michelle Cliff, ...

A case study of systemic change from failure to success in select pennsylvania schools
It was the intent of this qualitative multiple-case study to pinpoint the reasons for school success in the contemporary age of school accountability measured through the advancement of student achievement test scores. After reviewing the literature related to systemic change, successful organizations, and effective leadership a conceptual framework that was developed by Senge (2012) emerged. This framework defines the following five elements necessary for successful systemic change: (1) shar...

effect academic self-efficacy and locus of control have in the successful completion of high school cyber courses
Little is known about the inner workings of virtual schools, and despite this, increasing numbers of parents and students are choosing cyber school as their platform for their education. Growth in the number of cyber charter schools, and their enrollment, continue to climb higher despite limited evidence of their educational effectiveness. Indications are that cyber charter enrollment demographics, while being somewhat elusive, show that many cyber charter schools are enrolling a larger per...

effect of acetaminophen on social pain
From medical problems, to psychopathology, to school shootings, the cost of the pain resulting from interpersonal ostracism and rejection is high. The suffering caused by being rejected and undervalued by others (i.e., social pain) has been shown to share a similar neural pathway as physical pain. DeWall et al. (2010) revealed that taking the over-the-counter painkiller (acetaminophen) deactivates these neural pathways following rejection as it does with physical pain. However, this effect ...

The current study involved the development, delivery, and evaluation of an intervention meant to educate women about sexual objectification and its consequences and decrease women's reported enjoyment of sexualization. effects of syllabus design on course information retention by at-risk first semester college students
Researchers have examined and researched most aspects of the educational experience. However, one component has been neglected, the syllabus, specifically the design of the syllabus. Syllabi are a common element found across institutions of higher education. The syllabus is utilized to provide students with key information regarding course expectations, however students are not necessarily reading or retaining this important information. Today's students communicate using multimodal means e.g...

Enhancing community supervision: a unified voice for community corrections concerning police-probation/parole partnerships
Formalized police-probation/parole partnerships reached prominence in the mid-to-late 1990s elevated by the perceived successes of Boston's Operation Night Light, a component of the larger gun violence initiative known as CeaseFire (Braga, Kennedy, Waring, & Piehl, 2001; Corbett, 1998). Despite limited empirical evidence to confirm their impact on crime trends, Night Light programs were replicated elsewhere throughout the U.S. (International Association of Chiefs of Police [IACP], 2007a, 2007...

examination of undergraduate sophomore-level nursing students' personal reflection ability following high-fidelity simulation and video-assisted debriefings
Simulation provides an avenue to prepare nursing students to provide high-quality nursing care in the complex health-care environment. Debriefing, an aspect of simulation, is used to enhance student learning through a reflective discussion. Limited empirical evidence suggests the best approach to debrief that best enhances nursing students' reflection. Reflection is paramount in developing the type of thinking required for nursing. This study examined the influence of high-fidelity simulat...

Fabulous ordinariness & self-making: the other side of usonian identities
USonian identity has been defined controversially since its inception. Its representatives have largely been independent, white, wealthy, male, and heterosexual. However, the actual population of the US is more diverse and possesses much more complex identities. Some of the identifying factors of USonians derive from the US tradition of self-making. Traditional US self-made narratives, as with larger definitions of US identity, lack a full inclusivity and nationally representative characters,...
