The decade of the 1980s has been the era for health protection and health promotion. Health professionals believe that individuals can do a great deal to promote, maintain, or regain their health. Health protection is directed toward decreasing the
probability of experiencing illness by active protection of the body against pathological stressors or detection of illness in the asymptomatic stage. Health promotion is directed toward increasing the level of well-being and self-actualization of an individual, and it focuses on movement toward a state of health and well-being. Illness and disease appear to have little motivational significance for health-promoting behavior. Desire for growth, expression of human potential, and quality of life provide the motivation for health-promotive behaviors., Copyrights are retained by the author.
